Slot Machine Fever Dreams

This was my third story in the “Obsession” collection, and it’s a tricky one to rate. I enjoyed parts of it, but it never felt like a truly strong or original story.

„Dove, a recovering alcoholic covered in Emily Dickinson tattoos, serves up drinks and small talk at a casino in Vegas. Russell is a man on a roll. He claims to be a chain-restaurant manager, yet his tells point to different skills. The two leave together at the end of the night, but when all pretense is stripped away, they find themselves in a fight for their lives.“

Blurb

The writing itself is excellent, smooth, engaging and easy to sink into. The pacing kept me entertained, and there were definitely moments where the tension pulled me in. That said, the plot was fairly predictable, and I kept waiting for a big twist or a unique angle that never quite came. It’s a solid, entertaining short read, but nothing that will stick with me for long.
