I bought this book a long time ago. It was one of the first books I picked up when I got back into reading, and ever since then I had wanted to give it a proper read. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a disappointment.

They face two diverging paths which lead to the same destination. One is well-documented – the other untested, but rumoured to be shorter. Donner’s decision will shape the lives of everyone travelling with him. The searing heat of the desert gives way to biting winds and a bitter cold that freezes the cattle where they stand. Driven to the brink of madness, the ill-fated group struggles to survive and minor disagreements turn into violent confrontations. Then the children begin to disappear. The beginning was really slow, and it took probably the first third, or maybe even half of the book, to get going. I couldn‘t bring myself to care about the characters at all, and I think that had a lot to do with the structure of the book. There were flashbacks scattered throughout in which the reader learned more about certain characters. That worked fine in some places, but most of the time these flashbacks came right after the character in question had already died. So I didn‘t care about the death itself, and by the time I learned enough about the person to actually care, he or she was already gone. That seemed off to me.

The various events and incidents throughout the book also felt very episodic. They weren‘t connected to each other in any compelling way. The premise was really great, and I enjoyed the descriptions of the land, the people, and their deeds, but that alone isn‘t enough to carry such a long book. There were also a few genuinely creepy scenes, but that was about it. Most of the time, it felt boring and dragged on.

The best part came in the final stretch, roughly the last 20 to 30 percent, with the peak on the last few pages and in the epilogue. For that reason, this was only a 3 star read for me, and I can‘t really recommend it.

The Hunger – Die letzte Reise von Alma Katsu

Dieses Buch habe ich vor langer Zeit gekauft. Es war eines der ersten Bücher, die ich mir besorgt hatte, als ich wieder mit dem Lesen begann, und seither wollte ich es endlich richtig lesen. Leider war es eine Enttäuschung.

„Nachdem sie wochenlang nach Westen gereist sind, gelangt die Pioniergruppe an eine Weggabelung. Es ist an der Zeit, dass ihr Anführer, George Donner, eine Entscheidung trifft. Vor ihnen liegen zwei unterschiedliche Wege, die zum selben Ziel führen. Der eine ist gut dokumentiert – der andere unerprobt, soll aber Gerüchten zufolge kürzer sein. Donners Entscheidung wird das Leben aller mitreisenden Menschen prägen. Die sengende Hitze der Wüste weicht beißenden Winden und bitterer Kälte, die das Vieh an Ort und Stelle erstarren lässt. An den Rand des Wahnsinns getrieben, kämpft die unglückselige Gruppe ums Überleben, und kleine Meinungsverschiedenheiten eskalieren zu gewalttätigen Auseinandersetzungen. Dann beginnen die Kinder zu verschwinden. Während sich die Überlebenden gegeneinander wenden, wird einigen klar, dass die Bedrohung, der sie ausgesetzt sind, über die Gewalt der Naturgewalten hinausgeht und etwas Urtümlicheres und weitaus Tödlicheres ist.“

Der Anfang war wirklich zäh, und es dauerte wohl das erste Drittel, vielleicht sogar die halbe Geschichte, bis das Buch in Fahrt kam. Mit den Figuren wurde ich überhaupt nicht warm, und ich glaube, das hatte viel mit dem Aufbau des Buches zu tun. Es gibt immer wieder Rückblenden, in denen man als Leser mehr über bestimmte Figuren erfährt. An manchen Stellen funktionierte das gut, doch meistens kamen diese Rückblenden erst, nachdem die jeweilige Figur bereits gestorben war. So blieb mir der Tod selbst gleichgültig, und wenn ich genug über die Person wusste, um wirklich Anteil zu nehmen, war sie schon weg. Das wirkte auf mich unstimmig.

Auch die verschiedenen Ereignisse und Vorfälle im Buch wirkten sehr episodisch. Sie waren nicht auf eine wirklich fesselnde Weise miteinander verknüpft. Die Grundidee war grossartig, und die Schilderungen der Landschaft, der Menschen und ihrer Taten haben mir gefallen, aber das allein trägt ein so langes Buch nicht. Es gab zwar einige wirklich unheimliche Szenen, doch viel mehr blieb davon nicht übrig. Die meiste Zeit wirkte das Buch auf mich langweilig und zog sich.

Am stärksten war der Schlussteil, etwa die letzten 20 bis 30 Prozent, mit dem Höhepunkt auf den letzten Seiten und im Epilog. Aus diesem Grund war es für mich nur eine 3 Sterne Lektüre, und ich kann das Buch nicht wirklich empfehlen.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
