I’ve now read, listened to, and watched Andy Weir’s short story “The Egg” three times, and it still hits me right in the feels every single time. The first time I encountered it, my mind was officially blown. Even on a re-visit, whether reading, listening, or watching, it remains just as moving, imaginative, and deeply wholesome.
The core idea of this story is one I absolutely love. It’s not entirely new, since great thinkers and dreamers have been toying with similar concepts for centuries, but Weir manages to distill it into a beautifully compact form. In just a few pages, he packs in a wealth of thought-provoking ideas without ever making it feel heavy-handed or preachy.
Although I wouldn’t call myself religious (to be honest, I’m not much of a fan of the money-collecting institutions that often come with it), I do believe there’s something out there, some force, some truth that goes beyond what science can currently measure or explain. And this short story captures that feeling far better than any dusty philosophy tome ever could.
Whether you’re deeply spiritual, firmly grounded in science, or simply a fan of a good “what if” tale, I highly recommend giving “The Egg” a try. It’s a quick read, but it lingers long afterward, like a seed planted in your mind, gently widening your sense of what might be possible.
