Jade City

This book was an easy 5 star read for me. This book had everything: action, tension, humor, memorable and loveable characters, rich worldbuilding, and a magical system that feels fresh and perfectly integrated into the story. For years I somehow assumed this series leaned toward young adult and would therefore not be something I would enjoy. But after seeing several YouTube videos calling it one of the best modern fantasy series, I finally decided to give it a try. And I am so glad I did.

“Jade is the lifeblood of the city of Janloon – a stone that enhances a warrior’s natural strength and speed. Jade is mined, traded, stolen and killed for, controlled by the ruthless No Peak and Mountain families.
When a modern drug emerges that allows anyone – even foreigners – to wield jade, simmering tension between the two families erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all in the families, from their grandest patriarch to even the lowliest runner on the streets.”

Blurb

I will admit that, at first, I struggled a bit with the names, whether they were character names, city names, or the many cultural terms woven into the setting. But that initial hesitation disappeared very quickly. Once the story pulled me in and I found myself living in Janloon, which happened well before I even reached the 10 percent mark, the book became completely unputdownable.

What impressed me most was the balance of the story. It feels both intimate and epic, grounded in family dynamics and personal honor while also delivering large scale political conflict and brutal street level power struggles. Every fight has weight, every emotional beat feels earned, and every character comes across as fully realized. The world feels alive, and the stakes feel real.

I have only read the first book so far, but everything I have heard suggests that the second and third entries raise the bar even further. If that is true, then this trilogy might easily become one of my all time favorites. Recommending this book and the entire series is a no brainer for me. Every fantasy fan who has not picked it up yet absolutely needs to read it.

Enjoy the ride, and feel free to thank me and the YouTube algorithms later.
