The Small Hand / Die Kleine Hand

(Deutsche Review weiter untenđŸ‘‡đŸ»)

I picked up “The Small Hand” by Susan Hill as a Halloween read, thinking it was a classic ghost story. Only later did I find out that it was written much more recently, either in 2004 or 2010 depending on the edition. Unfortunately, it completely fell flat for me. I found it either so dull that I nodded off in broad daylight or so frustrating that I struggled with the writing, the plot, or the characters. I’m extremely disappointed and will need a few weeks before I dare to try another book by this author.

„Late one summer evening, antiquarian bookseller Adam Snow is returning from a client visit when he takes a wrong turn. He stumbles across a derelict Edwardian house and, compelled by curiosity, approaches the door. Standing before the entrance, he feels the unmistakable sensation of a small cold hand creeping into his own, as if a child had taken hold of it. At first he is merely puzzled by the odd incident but then begins to suffer attacks of fear and panic, and is visited by nightmares. He is determined to learn more about the house. But when he does, he receives further, increasingly sinister, visits from the small hand.“

Blurb

There were also several inconsistencies that pulled me out of the story. For example, it’s supposed to be the middle of summer when the protagonist meets a monk who tells him he needs to finish some work before fetching dinner because they go to bed early. Yet the protagonist already sees stars in the sky, which means it’s night. So either the monk doesn’t go to bed that early, or the protagonist can’t actually see stars. That scene puzzled me for several pages.

Another thing that bothered me was how outdated the protagonist’s behavior felt. He writes emails but apparently never thinks to look anything up online, even though the mystery practically begs for a Google search. Only at the end (no spoilers!) does his brother mention that he could have found much of the information on the internet. Nothing about this felt natural, and the rest of the story was simply dull and uneventful. The prose wasn’t strong enough to make up for the lack of plot or atmosphere. The ending was predictable and anticlimactic.

Overall, this was a frustrating experience and only a 2-star read for me.
