The sixth book in the Dark Tower series, was a real treat on my journey through King’s universe. I’ve been reading not just the core Dark Tower books, but also the many connected novels, and this one was a fantastic continuation.

„Susannah has used the power of Black Thirteen to get to New York where she can give birth to a child fated to grow up as Roland’s nemesis. Jake and Father Callahan set out to break her date with destiny and to find Calvin Tower, owner of the vacant lot where a magical rose grows – a rose that must be saved at all costs. Meanwhile, Roland and Eddie tumble into Maine in the Summer of 1977. Here they are greeted by the gangster Balazar and must face their maker, a man called Stephen King…“

What I really loved about “Song of Susannah” is how easily I slipped back into the story after a bit of a gap since the fifth volume. The writing style is comfortable, easy to read, and classic King: sometimes a bit chatty or heavy with detail, but that’s just his style and you either embrace it or you don’t.

I’ve grown to love all the protagonists by this point: Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, Oy and the whole ka-tet. And it was especially fun to see all the interconnections to King’s other works become really clear here. Like having Father Callahan from “Salem’s Lot” step in as a major character. Plus, the moment Stephen King writes himself into the story was just hilarious and surprising. It added a really fun, meta twist that I didn’t expect.

Even though the book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and leaves the fate of the characters up in the air, I actually loved that. It just makes me more excited to dive into the next book. Overall, I’d give it a solid 5 stars. The whole Dark Tower journey has been amazing so far, and this volume is probably my favorite one yet.

Das sechste Buch in der Dark-Tower-Reihe, war ein echtes Highlight auf meiner Reise durch Kings Universum. Ich lese ja nicht nur die Hauptbände des Dunklen Turms, sondern auch viele der verbundenen Romane und dieses Buch war eine fantastische Fortsetzung.

„Susannah hat die Macht von Black Thirteen genutzt, um nach New York zu gelangen, wo sie ein Kind zur Welt bringen kann, das dazu bestimmt ist, als Rolands Erzfeind aufzuwachsen. Jake und Pater Callahan machen sich auf, um ihr Schicksal zu verhindern und Calvin Tower zu finden, den Besitzer des unbebauten Grundstücks, auf dem eine magische Rose wächst – eine Rose, die um jeden Preis gerettet werden muss. Unterdessen landen Roland und Eddie im Sommer 1977 in Maine. Dort werden sie vom Gangster Balazar empfangen und müssen sich ihrem Schöpfer stellen, einem Mann namens Stephen King …“

Was ich an „Song of Susannah“ wirklich mochte, war, wie leicht ich wieder in die Geschichte hineingefunden habe, auch wenn seit dem fünften Band etwas Zeit vergangen war. Der Schreibstil ist angenehm, leicht zu lesen und typisch King: manchmal ein bisschen ausschweifend oder detailreich, aber das gehört einfach dazu, und man nimmt es so an, wie es ist.

Inzwischen habe ich alle Protagonisten richtig ins Herz geschlossen – Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, Oy und das ganze Ka-Tet. Besonders schön fand ich, wie in diesem Band die Verbindungen zu vielen anderen King-Büchern richtig deutlich werden. Zum Beispiel mit Father Callahan aus „Brennen muss Salem“, der hier eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Und dass King sich selbst in die Geschichte hineinschreibt, hat mich wirklich überrascht und zum Schmunzeln gebracht. Das war ein witziger, unerwarteter Meta-Twist.

Obwohl das Buch mit einem ziemlichen Cliffhanger endet und das Schicksal der Figuren in der Schwebe bleibt, hat mir das gut gefallen. Es macht einfach Lust auf den nächsten Band. Insgesamt würde ich dem Ganzen 5 Sternen geben. Die gesamte Reise durch den Dunklen Turm ist bisher fantastisch, und dieser Band ist vermutlich bisher mein liebster.
