The journey with Holly Gibney continues. And what a continuation it is! I’m a huge fan of Stephen King, but I don’t think everything he’s written is outstanding. Still, the Bill Hodges Trilogy and now “The Outsider” are definitely top-tier for me. Rarely have I been so captivated and emotionally involved at the same time. The suspense is consistently high, the plot is cleverly constructed, and the characters, as so often with King, are wonderfully multi-layered. But here he managed to grip me even more strongly. I truly suffered, hoped, and puzzled along with the characters. And no, that doesn’t happen with every one of his books.

“In Flint City’s park, the body of an eleven-year-old boy is discovered. Eyewitness accounts and crime scene evidence unambiguously point to an unassuming citizen: Terry Maitland, a well-liked English teacher, coach of the youth baseball team, married, father of two young daughters. The story begins with a bang: the shocking arrest of a respected citizen. Right from the start, King portrays the investigators from the police and district attorney’s office as so unlikeable that you’d love to reach through the pages and shake them. You really wonder how anyone can behave so blindly and arrogantly. All the more satisfying, then, to see how at least one of them undergoes real development. By the end you realize that they are just people too—with flaws, but also with heart.

As so often with King, the entire cast of characters feels authentic. Every figure has their role, their personality, their impact. Some you grow fond of, others you’d gladly shoot to the moon. And that makes the story all the more vivid.

The book is incredibly suspenseful, at times truly dark, but never over the top. The mix of classic thriller elements with subtle horror works beautifully. I could hardly put it down because I needed to know what was behind it all. And that’s exactly why my advice is: read it without knowing too much beforehand! The uncertainty, the gradual uncovering, is a big part of the thrill.

For me, “The Outsider” is an absolutely recommendable novel—even for those who may not usually be into Stephen King. It’s a gripping, clever thriller with a mysterious twist, strong characters, and an atmosphere that won’t let you go.

Die Reise mit Holly Gibney geht weiter. Und wie sie weitergeht! Ich bin zwar ein grosser Fan von Stephen King, aber ich finde längst nicht alles, was er geschrieben hat, überragend. Doch die Bill-Hodges-Trilogie und jetzt auch „Der Outsider“ gehören für mich definitiv zur Spitzenklasse. Selten war ich gleichzeitig so gefesselt und emotional involviert. Die Spannung ist konstant hoch, der Plot clever konstruiert und die Charaktere, wie so oft bei King, wunderbar vielschichtig. Aber hier hat er es geschafft, mich besonders stark zu packen. Ich habe richtig mitgelitten, mitgehofft und mitgegrübelt. Und ja, das gelingt mir nicht bei jedem seiner Bücher.

„Im Stadtpark von Flint City wird die Leiche eines elfjährigen Jungen gefunden. Die Geschichte beginnt gleich mit einem Paukenschlag: der überraschenden Festnahme eines angesehenen Bürgers. Und direkt am Anfang zeichnet King die Ermittler von Polizei und Staatsanwaltschaft derart unsympathisch, dass man sie am liebsten durch das Buch schütteln möchte. Man fragt sich wirklich, wie man sich so blind und arrogant verhalten kann. Umso schöner ist es, mitzuerleben, wie sich zumindest bei einem der Beteiligten eine echte Entwicklung vollzieht. Am Ende merkt man, dass auch sie nur Menschen sind mit Fehlern, aber auch mit Herz.

Wie so oft bei King ist das gesamte Figurenensemble stimmig. Jede Figur hat ihre Rolle, ihren Charakter, ihre Wirkung. Manche schliesst man ins Herz, andere würde man gern auf den Mond schiessen. Und das macht die Geschichte umso lebendiger.

Das Buch ist unglaublich spannend, teilweise richtig düster, aber nie übertrieben. Die Mischung aus klassischem Thriller und subtilen Horror-Elementen funktioniert hervorragend. Ich konnte das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen, weil ich unbedingt wissen wollte, was hinter allem steckt. Und genau deshalb lautet mein Tipp: Lest es, ohne vorher viel darüber zu wissen! Das Ungewisse, das schrittweise Enthüllen, ist ein grosser Teil des Reizes.

Für mich ist „Der Outsider“ ein absolut empfehlenswerter Roman, auch für Menschen, die sonst vielleicht nicht so viel mit Stephen King anfangen können. Es ist ein packender, cleverer Thriller mit mysteriösem Einschlag, starken Charakteren und einer Atmosphäre, die einen nicht mehr loslässt.
