This anthology contains four short novels which, according to most critics, are among the best Stephen King has written to date. I can now say that this is definitely true. These four stories are definitely some of the best I’ve read from King so far and a 100% must-read, not just for fans. 😁👍🏻 But now let’s get to the individual stories:

Pin-Up / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The first story is certainly well known to many. It is “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”. This short story was made into a very successful film in the 90s with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins under the title “The Shawshank Redemption”. And the story is really great. The plot is not necessarily original or otherwise special, but the emotions that are conveyed and the great characters were incredibly fascinating. You can’t help but feel like you’re in prison and still enjoy every page. 😁

Apt Pupil / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The second story was incredibly strange at first. It gradually became very scary and sometimes brutal. I’ve already read a few novels by Stephen King before, but the cruelty towards animals and humans was much more raw here and sometimes (imho) not necessary for the story. Especially since the background theme of the whole story would actually already have more than enough cruelty… Nevertheless, the plot was exciting and full of confusing emotions, which is why I really liked it in the end.

The Body / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The third story is a coming-of-age novel with some very philosophical, profound thoughts and a dash of horror. It’s about a group of friends who don’t have an easy life. They set off on a very big adventure (for them) and experience a lot in a short space of time, which shapes their friendship and influences them for the rest of their lives. The tragic elements bring a lot of heartache and are so incredibly well written that you could (and will) cry. 😢

The Breathing Method / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I found the fourth story to be incredibly empathetic, dramatic and tragic. The story actually tells a story within a story. It’s about a somewhat strange club to which the main character is invited by his boss. Men meet there to drink scotch and smoke cigars. They also talk a little or (on Thursdays) tell stories. One of these stories ends up being very memorable and tragic. Once again, the author managed to connect me with the protagonists and make me feel all the feels.

As I said at the beginning, I have to agree with many of my predecessors: This book, these four short novels are definitely among the best Stephen King has ever written. 😁👍🏻 A must-read for everyone!!! 🥳

Frühling, Sommer, Herbst und Tod

Diese Anthologie enthält vier Kurzromane, die gemäss den meisten Kritikern zum Besten gehört, was Stephen King bisher geschrieben hat. Ich kann nun sagen, dass das definitiv der Wahrheit entspricht. Diese vier Geschichten gehören auf jeden Fall zu den Besten, die ich bisher von King gelesen habe und ein 100%iges Muss, nicht nur für alle Fans. 😁👍🏻 Jetzt kommen wir aber zu den einzelnen Geschichten:

Pin-Up / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Die erste Geschichte ist auf Englisch mit Sicherheit viel bekannter. Es handelt sich um „Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption“. Diese Kurzgeschichte wurde mit Morgan Freeman und Tim Robbins unter dem Titel „Die Verurteilten“ in den 90ern sehr erfolgreich verfilmt. Und die Geschichte ist auch wirklich grossartig. Der Plot ist nicht unbedingt originell oder sonst speziell aber die Emotionen, die transportiert werden und die tollen Charaktere haben mich unglaublich fasziniert. Man fiebert mit und wähnt sich selbst im Gefängnis und geniesst trotzdem jede Seite. 😁

Der Musterschüler / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Die zweite Geschichte war zuerst vor allem unglaublich seltsam. Nach und nach wurde das Ganze sehr unheimlich und teilweise auch brutal. Ich habe doch schon einige Romane von Stephen King gelesen, aber die Grausamkeiten gegen Tiere und Menschen war hier deutlich roher und teilweise (m.E.) auch nicht notwendig für die Geschichte. Vor allem, da das Hintergrundthema der ganzen Geschichte eigentlich schon mehr als genug Grausamkeit aufweisen würde… Dennoch war der Plot spannend und voller verwirrender Gefühle, weshalb es mir am Ende sehr gut gefallen hat.

Die Leiche / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Die dritte Geschichte ist ein Coming-Of-Age-Roman mit einigen sehr philosophischen, tiefgründigen Gedanken und einer Prise Horror. Es geht um eine Gruppe von Freunden, die es im Leben alle nicht so einfach haben. Sie machen sich auf zu einem (für sie) sehr grossen Abenteuer und erleben innert kurzer Zeit sehr viel, was Ihre Freundschaft prägt und sie für das Ganze leben beeinflusst. Die tragischen Elemente bringen viel Herzschmerz und sind so unglaublich toll geschrieben, dass man heulen könnte (und es auch tut). 😢

Atemtechnik / ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Die vierte Geschichte empfand ich als unglaublich einfühlsam, dramatisch und tragisch. Die Geschichte erzählt eigentlich eine Geschichte in der Geschichte. Es geht dabei um einen etwas seltsamen Klub in den der Hauptdarsteller von seinem Chef eingeladen wird. Dort treffen sich Männer zum Trinken von Scotch und zum Rauchen von Zigarren. Daneben wird noch ein wenig geredet oder (jeweils Donnerstags) werden Geschichten erzählt. Eine dieser Geschichten ist am Ende doch sehr prägend und tragisch. Auch hier hat es der Autor wieder geschafft, mich mit den Protagonisten zu verbinden und mich all die Emotionen fühlen zu lassen.

Wie schon zu Beginn gesagt, muss ich vielen meiner Vorgängern Recht geben: Dieses Buch, diese vier Kurzromane sind definitv unter den Besten, die Stephen King je geschrieben hat. 😁👍🏻 Ein Must-Read für jeden!! 🥳
