The Heart of a Mother

This was my fourth story in the Obsession Collection, and it turned out to be one of my favorites so far.

„Hillary Jean leads an enviable life. She has a loving husband, a beautiful home, caring friends, and meaningful work planning fundraisers. Yet she’s always felt incomplete. After a DNA website emails her a match, Hillary sets out to find the daughter she gave up twenty-five years ago. But her hunger to reconnect threatens to destroy the very thing she hopes to gain.“

Blurb

Julie Clark’s writing style is both smooth and engaging, making it easy to settle in and stay immersed in the story. The characters felt realistic and well developed, enough so that I found myself invested in their actions and emotions from the start.

Although I did see the twist coming (so it wasn’t as shocking when it was finally revealed), I still found it satisfying. In a way, anticipating the outcome highlighted how well Clark laid the groundwork for her surprise ending. Despite that touch of predictability, the short story remained thoroughly enjoyable, delivering a balanced blend of tension and warmth. Overall, the story stands out in the collection, and I’m happy to recommend this one.
