There are not many books that earn five stars so effortlessly. This book was an absolute delight to read, filled with incredible characters and a plot that kept me completely absorbed from start to finish.
“On the island of Kekon, the Kaul family is locked in a violent feud for control of the capital city and the supply of magical jade that endows trained Green Bone warriors with supernatural powers they alone have possessed for hundreds of years. Beyond Kekon’s borders, war is brewing. Powerful foreign governments and mercenary criminal kingpins alike turn their eyes on the island nation. Jade, Kekon’s most prized resource, could make them rich – or give them the edge they’d need to topple their rivals. Faced with threats on all sides, the Kaul family is forced to form new and dangerous alliances, confront enemies in the darkest streets and the tallest office towers, and put honor aside in order to do whatever it takes to ensure their own survival – and that of all the Green Bones of Kekon.”

As the second book in the trilogy, it surpassed my expectations in every way. I cared deeply about the characters, their struggles, and the heavy burdens they had to carry. They suffer greatly throughout the story, yet their strength and determination never cease to shine through. Walking through the streets of Janloon alongside Hilo or the Maik brothers felt so vivid and real that I could picture the entire island before my eyes, as if I were truly there.
This series has firmly earned its place among the very best in modern fantasy, perhaps even the best. It has everything I love in the genre: compelling family drama, tense political maneuvering, gripping action, and a world so alive that it lingers in your mind long after you turn the final page. I am convinced that these books will be remembered for a very long time.
I firmly believe that anyone with even the slightest interest in fantasy should read this series. And even if you are not a fantasy reader yet, this might be the perfect place to start. “Jade War” is not just a continuation of a great story, it is a powerful, emotional, and brilliantly crafted novel in its own right.
PS: I am also looking forward to reading “The Jade Setter of Janloon” and, hopefully very soon after its release, “Jade Shards”, for which I managed to secure a signed and limited copy. The wait will be hard, but absolutely worth it!
