The Unmaking of June Farrow

I picked up this book on the recommendation of my girlfriend, and I’m really glad I did. “The Unmaking of June Farrow” turned out to be an unforgettable read, emotional, poetic, and full of heart. I was immediately drawn into its mysterious atmosphere, and while there were some slower parts in the middle where not all that much happened, the final third more than made up for it. The last 30 percent absolutely wrecked me, in the best way.

„In the small mountain town of Jasper, North Carolina, June Farrow is waiting for fate to find her. The Farrow women are known for their thriving flower farm – and the mysterious curse that has haunted them for generations. The madness that led to Susanna Farrow’s disappearance left her daughter, June, to be raised by her grandmother. Everyone in Jasper is certain it’s only a matter of time before she finds the same end, but June has kept secret that her unravelling has already begun. After her grandmother’s death, June follows a series of clues that link her mother’s disappearance to the town’s dark history, leading finally to a mysterious door. Behind it may lay the answer to the mysteries that have always lingered like a dark shadow. Upon crossing the threshold, June embarks on a journey that will not only change both the past and the future, but entangle her fate and her heart in a star-crossed love.“

It was heartbreaking to follow the story of June and Eamon. Their connection, stretched across time and tragedy, hit me deep. I’ve read a lot of books, but very few have made me feel emotions this strongly. The longing, the aching pull between them, it was palpable. You could almost reach out and touch it.

Adrienne Young’s writing is beautiful and poetic without ever feeling overdone. There’s something so sensory about it; I could feel every blade of grass brushing against my skin, hear the quiet hum of the fields, and taste the bittersweetness of love and sacrifice. It’s one of those rare books that lingers in your chest for a while after turning the last page.
