Even though “The Wolves of the Calla” is officially the fifth volume in “The Dark Tower” series, it was actually the sixth book I read because I picked up “The Wind Through the Keyhole” first. Overall, I really enjoyed it, even though the story slowed down a bit in the middle.

„Roland and his ka-tet are bearing through the forests of the Mid-World on their journey to the Dark Tower. Tracking their every move is a group of farmers from the town of Calla Bryn Sturgis. The trackers have been warned that the Wolves, a band of masked riders, are about to gallop out of the dark land of Thunderclap and raid their town. And they want to enlist the help of the four gunslingers. How can Roland and his tet both protect the innocent community and return to New York to save our world’s incarnation of the Dark Tower from the machinations of the evil Sombra Corporation?“

There were quite a few stretches where not much happened, with too many conversations, long periods of waiting, and backstories being told. Some of it felt a little too drawn out. Still, I found many parts interesting, especially all the references to other Stephen King books. One moment that truly stood out for me was at the end, when Roland finds a copy of “Salem’s Lot” written by Stephen King. That little meta twist was hilarious. And then there is a mention of “Harry Potter”, which the characters know nothing about, but as a reader, I found that moment really fun and clever.

I was absolutely furious during Callahan’s discussion of abortion. It felt out of place and did not add anything meaningful to the plot, at least not yet. It seemed like it was only there to provoke. I really hope it serves a deeper purpose in the larger arc of the series. Otherwise, it was just frustrating and unnecessary.

The ending was amazing. It was packed with action, tension, and that classic gunslinger energy. That completely made up for the slower middle section. The book ends with a great cliffhanger, and I would love to jump straight into the next volume. But first, on my Dark Tower journey, I am planning to read “The Talisman” and “Black House”.

Der Dunkle Turm 5 – Wolfsmond von Stephen King

Obwohl “Wolves of the Calla” offiziell der fünfte Band der “Der Dunkle Turm”-Reihe ist, war es für mich tatsächlich das sechste Buch, da ich “The Wind Through the Keyhole” vorher gelesen habe. Insgesamt hat mir das Buch sehr gut gefallen, auch wenn die Geschichte in der Mitte etwas ins Stocken geraten ist.

„Roland und sein Ka-Tet durchqueren die Wälder von Mid-Welt auf ihrer Reise zum Dunklen Turm. Jede ihrer Bewegungen wird von einer Gruppe Bauern aus dem Städtchen Calla Bryn Sturgis beobachtet. Die Verfolger wurden gewarnt: Die Wölfe – eine Bande maskierter Reiter – stehen kurz davor, aus dem finsteren Thunderclap hervorzubrechen und ihr Dorf zu überfallen. Und sie wollen die Hilfe der vier Revolvermänner gewinnen. Doch wie können Roland und sein Tet sowohl die unschuldige Gemeinschaft beschützen als auch nach New York zurückkehren, um die Verkörperung des Dunklen Turms in unserer Welt vor den finsteren Machenschaften der Sombra Corporation zu retten?“

Es gab einige Abschnitte, in denen nicht viel passierte, mit zu vielen Gesprächen, langen Wartezeiten und Rückblicken. Manches wirkte ein wenig zu langgezogen. Trotzdem fand ich viele Teile interessant, besonders wegen der zahlreichen Anspielungen auf andere Bücher von Stephen King. Ein Moment, der mir besonders im Gedächtnis geblieben ist, war ganz am Ende, als Roland ein Exemplar von “Salem’s Lot” findet – geschrieben von Stephen King. Dieser Meta-Moment war einfach herrlich. Und dann wurde auch noch “Harry Potter” erwähnt, obwohl die Figuren keine Ahnung haben, worum es sich dabei handelt. Als Leser fand ich das ziemlich cool und amüsant.

Wirklich wütend gemacht hat mich allerdings Callahans Diskussion über Abtreibung. Für mich wirkte das völlig deplatziert und hat nichts zur Handlung beigetragen, zumindest bis jetzt. Es schien nur dazu da zu sein, um zu provozieren. Ich hoffe sehr, dass das Ganze im weiteren Verlauf der Reihe noch eine tiefere Bedeutung bekommt. Ansonsten war es einfach nur unnötig und ärgerlich.

Das Ende war hingegen großartig. Voller Action, Spannung und dieser typischen Revolvermann-Energie. Das hat die eher schleppende Mitte komplett wieder wettgemacht. Das Buch endet mit einem starken Cliffhanger, und ich würde am liebsten sofort mit dem nächsten Band weitermachen. Aber auf meinem Weg zum Turm stehen nun erst einmal “The Talisman” und “Black House” auf dem Plan.
