This was my third book by Hendrix and I’m beginning to love his writing style quite a bit. 🙂 And I truely liked this book very much for everything: the 80s references, the friendship, the horror. It is a fantastic read, even with some small tears at the end. 😁👍🏻
„The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act…different. She’s moody. She’s irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she’s nearby. Abby’s investigation leads her to some startling discoveries—and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?“

The book starts slow and seems like a teeny-story about a lonely girl that finds her tribe. The reader accompanies the four girls to various places and events and slowly the creepy or at least strange stuff starts happening. As I said, the writing style is awesome, at least for me and I like the pacing and also how Hendrix desribes scenes and feelings. Especially how he manages to let someone left out or getting betrayed, which makes me mad everytime. 🙂 And then one really cares for all the protagonists but I guess that would happend anyway since this was even the case in Hendrix‘ short story „The Ankle Snatcher“. His books always start fun and light and make you like all the characters and them the horror unfolds and by that time, you are already fully invested. 😁👌🏻
Since the whole story plays out in the year 1988 it is packed with 80s references. Songs, specific phones and other products, foods and drinks or ads. Even the chapters are named after songs from this era. 😍🥰🛼📺📼
And because these 80s references are so cool, I really recommend you to get the Kindle-Book with the Audio- and Video-Files. I was able to find it on amazon.de for about € 1.87 but I don‘t know if it is available in other regions. There you find news clippings, police reports, ads, info-material and even a Spotify-Playlist which is unfortunately lost on you without that e-book even if you have the physical copy. In my opinion it really adds to the whole experience. 🙂 I also listened to the audiobook narrated by Emily Woo Zeller which did a phenomenal job with different voices and tones. Well worth the audible credit. 😁👍🏻
Great recommendation for all the 80s kidsand everyone in need of a great book for halloween. 🎃👻💀👍🏻😍
