Besides “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” this was my second Neil Gaiman book and my first from Terry Pratchett. At the beginning I had a hard time getting into the novel. I felt as if I have no clue what happens and the jokes were not so much for me. At the end I really liked it even if it will not stand among my most favorite books like it seems to be for so many other readers. 🙂

“What if, for once, the predictions are right, and the Apocalypse really is due to arrive next Saturday, just after tea? It’s a predicament that Aziraphale, a somewhat fussy angel, and Crowley, a fast-living demon, now find themselves in. They’ve been living amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and, truth be told, have grown rather fond of the lifestyle and, in all honesty, are not actually looking forward to the coming Apocalypse. And then there’s the small matter that someone appears to have misplaced the Antichrist.”

As I said, the writing was a bit chaotic for me at the beginning and I didn’t find my way into the story. I also found the humor to be special. And while I normally have no problems with all sorts of jokes and comedians it didn’t click with me as I was hoping it would. So it dragged a little bit for me, but it had its great moments (i.e. the scenes with Witchfinder Sergeant Shadwell or the great personalities of Crowley and Aziraphale). Luckily shortly after the half I found myself immersed in the story and really cared for everyone. 😁 The jokes grew on me, as silly as they sometimes were (i.e. Newt Pulsifer trying to repair the electronics to make sure he destroys it… 😂). Some of the greatest scenes for me came at the very end, when everyone was thinking about what happened and some characters stated their opinions and reasons for their behavior. These parts were the ones that almost rose the book to a 5 star but not completely. 😃 I don’t know if this book is a good starting point for Neil Gaiman and/or Terry Pratchett but I liked spending time in the story and I’m sure I will visit both authors again in the future. 😁👍🏻
